You Are Not Allowed …

You know this is true, don’t you?

You are not allowed to say certain things, aloud..

You can think them all you like, at least for a while

but eventually, if they keep stealing freedom of speech, that too will be taboo..

Bullies? Understanding Bullies?

Na, not in this life.    Let’s ‘understand’ the targets (of bullies) first!

A note on the topic of bullies and understanding them:

“It is sad to see that so many articles are favoring the bullies by first seeking to find out their reason for bullying. Society needs to come to the plate and really first handle the important task of making the  target of the bully feel safe, protected and heard.

Our society has too much emphasis on making bullies feel “heard” .

Let’s listen to the targets, the victims , first and  let the officials, the Deans,  the authorities  or police handle the bullies.  Most seem to forget that most targets are bullied for months or even years before the bullying comes to light . So in a case like that, the target, the victim, the target of the bully really needs to be separated from the bully and the authorities or teachers or those in control of the education systems should take their heads out of the sand and put it on hold a bit as they continue to try to “understand” the bully. I get it that yes, eventually you need to understand the why of it, but not first before putting a space, a distance between the bully and the bully’s target. The school and the officials get it right as they first begin to understand the “target” of the bully rather than trying first to understand the “bully” . There are thousands of people that have had tough lives and yet they don’t resort to bullying. So, as a society, it is not correct to assume that ‘bullies” have a ‘reason’ for bullying. There’s no reason and there are no excuses. This is just another opinion, from a different point of view” . – artfromperry .justbreathe15

In and throughout our school systems and centers there is a theme going on and around. It appears that (some) think that the solution is to understand the bully.

Imagine if you went to court with a murderer — and the victim’s family there — ,  do you think that trying to “understand” the murderer helps the victims or the targets of the murderer?

Somebody needs to come up with  better ideas on handling school and center problems.

“Pinhole” — Go Do This!

These are my ‘modern’  pinhole style photographs that I took that day that I attended the course in New York City,  New York,  United States of America..

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

So, every single year, there’s a community organization that celebrates “National Pinhole Camera”  Day.     Small details:    They charge you about five dollars and you pre-register for the class.    (There’s a picture of some of the class in this slide show — participants all ages, child to adult but children must have an adult present).    So in this class, they supply all the materials to make your first pinhole camera.   That’s one entire class on one day.     Then on another day, you go back to the place to use the camera to take pictures.    It’s all very interesting.

My Story:

Yes, I took the first class and I paid my five dollars.  And, indeed, I did  create my  Pinhole Camera with their supplies.    And, as life would have it, something came up and I didn’t go back to the second class (which is totally outdoors- the first class i s indoors).

This is a personal story of my experience on that day, in my city.      And hoping you share your experience.    Or were you right here in our city that day ?

Signs of a Good Instructor

Some of the signs of a good instructor:

  1.  They have the right focus – they teach the subject that they are being paid to teach.  They stick to the topic.
  2. They do not go off on tangents or on rants because of their own personal views.
  3. They leave their personal lives and personal choices out of the conversation in classes.
  4. They respect their students — all of their students, not just the ones that do work for them or that help them out.
  5. They treat everyone equally.   That’s right – they treat everyone equally.
  6. They leave politics and political agendas out of the classroom unless the course is about politics or history.   They know enough to leave their personal opinions out of the classroom, especially if they know that they can not control their temper around the issue of politics .
  7. They know what they are there – in the classroom-  to teach and they stick to that topic.
  8. Basically, we all know the signs of a good teacher, the bottom line is that they teach!   They realize they are in the room to teach — not to propagandize and not to push students to agree with them on political issues that they don’t agree on.  So, hence,  teachers keep your politics out of the room.

Schools and senior centers, and colleges and universities are places of learning, places of connection, places of growth, and places here many human beings from all different backgrounds become connected through conversation, ideas, thoughts, opinions and through personal growth and work towards unity in spirit and unity in the world.

The Birds ……

What can I say?  I love birds and I love taking pictures of birds.  So why is the feature photograph of that old, black cat?

Well,  that’s my beautiful, black cat.   I got him when he was a tiny, tiny, little character.  After spending about two full hours, or more, with him at the shelter in Brooklyn, I chose this kitten to by ours!     He was simply beautiful!   (When I say, “ours” , I mean that I chose him for us, for our family, at the time when we lived in Brooklyn).

And now, today, he is living happily in the southwest, on some farm.   Long story, but he’s there, somewhere.

And now for the entry.   I love birds and taking pictures of birds, so there is a small collection of the pictures of  birds that I have taken over the past few decades.

It’s Not the Camera!

Whatever, lol.
I happen to like this picture.

I took this decades ago, and it still remains one of my favorite photographs.

And I didn’t use very expensive equipment. Yes, I know that I can take it to photoshop and make it “perfect’ but that’s a problem since I don’t take pictures in order to produce perfection.

To the contrary, I take photos in order to disregard perfection and to just show what is real.

And, sorry , charlie, photoshop pictures are not real.

Give me the blurred, the simple, the ordinary, the silly messed up photos but give me truth. Give me the truth of the moment. That’s all I need and that’s all I take.

YES, of course , I have used photoshop.
But what I’m saying is seriously, some of my favorite photos are simply that — they are my favorites, without the help of some electronic program. I guess that’s why I do not sell photographs.

It seems that most people that “sell” have to make their pictures perfect.

Leave me out of that one.

I’d like to see the day when I can sell life as it is, photos as they are, as they come out of the camera, without me trying to fix them up to be perfect.

There you go, that’s my rant for today.

So, I Took These Photographs

Things that I remember to do, when I remember to do them.

  • Before clicking that shutter button, check all four corners of the shot and all the areas around the margins of the photograph.   Frame that subject properly , whether in the center or off to the side , paying attention, if you want to do so, to the ‘rule of thirds’.
  • Look at your picture, through the viewfinder, and ask yourself if the picture is too complicated, too distracting or simply too ‘busy’ to really enjoy.
  • Consider doing the photograph in a different color, or tone.   Sometimes, depending on the subject, place or time, burnt sienna might be more pleasing than regular black and white or even than a color photograph.
  • Portrait,  ?    Check the person’s head.   There are all too many photographs that are portraits that have a tree or other odd thing sticking out of a person’s head.
  • Brace yourself!   If you are not using a tripod, then brace yourself against something to steady the camera.  Or at the least, bring your elbows into your body instead of posing like someone doing the ‘chicken dance’ while taking that picture.  This simple thing will eliminate most camera shake.
  • Consider the ‘angle’ of the photograph.     I ‘saw’ a picture once, before I snapped the shutter button, I decided to walk around a bit and really look at the different angles of the would-be picture.      See the picture here.     This is the best view that I finally decided on .
  • Consider this — don’t bother with whatever others will think of  your photograph.  You are taking this picture for yourself and or to express yourself to others, or to remember a particular time, place or day.  It really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks of your picture, of your style or of your photographs.   Just keep on keeping on and keep  on taking those photographs!
  • Practice.    That’s about it.   The more photographs you take, the more experienced you will be.  The more mistakes you make, the more ‘best’ photos you will take.  Practice, practice but above all, have fun while you are doing this ‘practice’.

Empty of feelings,  appropriately a cold, wire, temporary sculpture, depicts what happens to  many families across the world.                                                                     The empty feeling in a mother,  leaving with her children, is topped by that empty feeling of the child, forced to leave her dad, her real family.     I find it interesting that this artist has the child facing backwards, looking back in this temp sculpture.                              In this temporary sculpture, after walking around the park there seeing different angles and views of this sculpture, I choose this one .   My choice of angles put the man in the middle of the scene, the monument in the background.    Both the permanent sculpture and the temporary sculpture compose a modern day picture of what sometimes happens to families across the world.              Empty places, empty spaces exist in places where there are lots of people.  Truth is empty isn’t really empty at all.    artfromperry

Caption this one okay?

(NOTE: )   There are more photographs under this long writing.   Look below if you are short on time.
I enjoyed a great morning at the Marquetry Society meeting and then went to this library room.  I found a cool book on videography, and opened  — randomly– to a page.     Imagine that?      I just pulled the book open and flipped a page and there was this headline to the article, “After the shooting was over….” .
I read the title of the reading and I paused…    “After the shooting is over….”  .  My  brother used a gun to end his life.    I, being different than him, use a camera for all my shooting.  But still, this headline got to me; it reached into the emptiness of my heart that still mourned for him…reprocessing the words, ” After the shooting is over” ..    I wished he would have thought about that.     They say that we shouldn’t think of the future, just be concerned about today.
However, in this one case, I just wish he had thought about the future as he made that horrible choice, maybe his last choice,   “After the shooting is over….” .
After the shooting is over, I gather his pain was relieved, finally.  But “after the shooting is over…” ,      After the shooting is over,  the shooter feels no pain but the survivors, the survivors remember the shooter in a very different way than  ‘before’ .
And as I always say, in everything, give thanks.   So I look for the good in this horrible tragedy.           The healing part was that he did not send his suicide note to me but sent it to someone else.        By not sending the note to me, and by sending it to a ‘distant’ family member,  he spared me, and my sons and my daughter and my grandkids, that crashing, ‘initial’ discovery , the grim notification  by  police, by detectives.     Thankfully,  we were spared the shock, the initial, immediate shock of the notification.     I really have to thank God for that.  Those days, approximately eleven days,  were a buffer from the shock waves.    It took me about eleven days to find out the truth about what happened, to get the details, to find out whether the story was true or not.      And while I initially thought the ‘not knowing’ was horrible,  I realize , in hindsight , that  the “not knowing” right away is what saved my mind from the earth-rocking shock of knowing what happened to him right away.
Thank you, dear brother , for sparing me from that grim discovery .      Who knows, maybe he did think about what happens, …”after the shooting is over”.  …

Sometimes that happens.                            This photograph was on display in  2015.      An empty chapel, I took that picture from the outside of the chapel, looking inside , in the window, and looking clear out the opposite window.   Empty of people, this chapel, just a simple image of a small church in a graveyard.

Empty beach path through the dunes

Empty branches of the Weeping Katsura tree ..winter empty .

And the most charming picture in there, in this collection of emptiness, the ray of hope here in the midst of the shadow and darker pictures, is the Cherry Blossom Tree.  The Cherry Blossom Tree symbolizes “New Beginnings”.     And at this point in time, we own two of these trees, and one of them has started sprouting little trees right after Hurricane Sandy happened.
It is a new beginning, every day is a new beginning!

And every day is YOUR day!   So celebrate it.

Let’s CELEBRATE!!   Yes, it’s that time of year again; it’s my birthday month!

January is my birthday month and I intend to have a very cool birthday.   If everything goes okay, I will be able to find a particular cake that I like and I will bring that home …

And my plan is to celebrate my birthday — all month long — by doing random acts of kindness for some of the people that I meet on my journey around town.  Just little acts of kindness, nothing grand, but those little things that are so important.   Yes, it’s the little things that are special.

So, I’m planning on a month of little things here and there, and

top it all off with my favorite kind of pie and people !

How to Protect Yourself from a Bully

NOTE:    This is about my photography,  my style of photography , when it comes to taking self-portraits.  And there is a little background of how I began using this style of portraits , many decades ago .

Below, a  “selfie”

First a little about “targets”

About “Targets” :

When someone is being bullied for years on end by the same person, they want to be invisible, yet they as human nature would have it want to be connected and included in their world and surroundings.

A person who is a target might, if they are an artist, photographer, or creative type, might begin taking selfies that ‘include’ the self, yet the person remains ‘invisible’ so that the bully doesn’t see the person. Distancing yourself from the bully is important and sometimes that means even taking yourself ‘out of the picture’ . So there you go, now you know the reason for the mysterious “selfies’.

An ‘early’ selfie, taken decades ago – below

Scrapbook photo

That photo – shadow in the forest – was taken in the year 2000 or 2001 .  (Any later dates on the photos url are because the photos were ‘put’ onto the computer at later dates, on various portable storage devices.

Bullying over Decades and Invisible Selfies:

This picture below is one that I took years ago or decades ago.

selfy decades ago

Someone has targeted me for decades, and decades ago, I began taking invisible selfies. This is more recent. I am , hopefully, free now. But I still like the style of an “invisible selfie”. Yes, silly you, that’s an elbow. You can find ‘targets’ amongst your own friends and family. Sometimes targets leave class early and get there late. Other times targets miss family events (in order to avoid one particular person). But, as time passes, the target will materialize, take their place in society, and they will no longer be silent, nor invisible completely.

IMG_0298.JPG More recent selfie, because I still like taking invisible selfies, and I love the forest and preserve areas of the land.

Headphones Help Targets Re-enter Society:

Do you know someone who wears headphones all the time? Possibly that person might be a target. I am not saying this is the case always ,but I’m saying it’s a possibility the person is a target, a silent target.

I know. When I lived in close quarters with a bully,   (when I lived in the same building), I wore headphones all the time. Even now, out in public, you might see me with headphones in public areas. And that is to avoid the ‘bully’ who still, to this day ‘looks for me’ . I am no longer staying ‘out of society’. I am trying to take part, to get out more. But I take my strong faith in the God of Peace, and my headphones with me. If I am with you and you see me put the headphones on my ears, it means I have spotted the bully and I am using my first method of avoidance, ‘close your ears’ to what the bully says. And in a few moments after that, depending on how strong I feel, I will either stand my ground or leave the place. No more bullies.

DOUBLE Advantages:  Headphones ,

Using headphones as a defense serves two purposes.  First it is a visible thing that can alert people around you that the bully is near you or approaching you.  (And yes, sometimes I have used headphones when the bully wasn’t around and then regular people approach and I must remember to take the headphones off.  They can become a habit , when worn every other day.

Secondly,  what you put onto your phone or radio, the music or the talk that you hear through the headphones can strengthen you, give you courage, and remind you that you have a strong faith .   So,  you are using a tool , the music or the talk , to get stronger and stronger in courage to be able to conquer your fear of the bully.   So, headphones work.

And yes, we need to help targets become more visible. I will always take photos like this, because these were my ticket to be ‘invisible’, slowly, one step at a time.

About the pictures below, these are only some of the selfies that I have taken over the years.   In some of the pictures, you will see a real portrait, a person.  Most of the ones where I am visible, it is because I am on television.   At the television  studio, I felt safe, because the bully refuses to come near the tv studio.   In fact, for decades, the bully has tried to get me to stop producing television.   There are times, that I might retreat, but so far, I’m keeping at it.

Lightbulb Moment:

In June, 2015, I finally became a bit brave and began appearing in photographs, hence, “lightbulb moment”  .

lightbulb moment

It is probably around the time that I began putting pictures online at various sites.   Since 1991, I’ve been “visible” on television but invisible in photographs.   One of the oldest invisible selfies that I took was the one shadow where there is a vintage light on the wall and the shadow is on the bottom left hand side of the photograph. That was taken in the 90s in New York City, between Brooklyn, and Manhattan, NYS.

What happened to make me more ‘visible’, in photographs?   What happened was that the bully stepped up the bullying and at that point, since my brother was gone, I decided it was time to stop hiding from the camera.    The person should not have stepped up the bullying after my brother died.  That was a mistake.  Yet, this was the mistake that really freed me.   Today, I feel free.   I might not be free, totally, because the bully is still around and still anxious to get near me and to start speaking with me , once again.   Today ,  I feel strong and I feel safer than I had felt in the past.

Part of the reason for this feeling is because of two things:

  1.  A more intense spiritual connection, and that helps me immensely .
  2. I did a video called, “The Un-silencing of Me”  and making that video public was a step in the right direction.  It is time that I use my voice to help myself get away from the bully.

on television 2016 artfromperry
The “Un-silencing” of Me

Today , I am not afraid of ‘being in pictures’ though I do not like ‘posed’ pictures because these are not real.   Candids are better, for me, anyway.   Why ‘pose’ for a picture when you can just be real and just let life happen?   The only posed pictures of myself that I have are my ‘INVISIBLE ” selfys.

A recent self that I took, look close; Yes, I’m in there.

I am an Executive Producer of a regular show that airs on community television.

Collection of INVISIBLE and visible selfys below:

Please make me visible, connected with the world, by making a comment.  Let me know that you have seen me here, in my photographs.   Your words are greatly appreciated.

If the bully continues to stay away from me , I will not reveal the bully’s name nor show a photograph of the bully.   That’s the plan for now.    I believe this is a good plan.

My true and real defense is my faith in God.  It is only God, the God of Peace , Who has protected me throughout my life. And I must acknowledge that because truth is important.

My thanks, first, always and forever , is to God.  You have read a  lot here and you have learned a lot about parts of my life.   If you want to help out here, you can help by simply leaving a note — so that I know that someone has read here.

Are you visible or invisible?

Peace on your journey.

And Happy New Year!

NOTE: The TWO paintings –   watercolor , the vases and the portrait in color  are beautiful art pieces by Sue Ehrlich.  She painted a very cool portrait of me and then gave it to me.   Thanks much.  I really like that one.

Scrapbook and Photojournalism 90s & Before and After

The featured photo there is of a page from a tiny book.   Someone wrote this cool book called, “First Aid for the Teenage Soul”  ..and I recommend the book.  It’s excellent, for everyone.

Note :  Remember, you are not in this alone.  Wherever you go, whatever you do, seriously, God is with you.  Even in any times when you have forgotten God, that never keeps Him from being right there, at your side.
So, I like that page in the book, “You’re not in this by yourself”.

Below this is the slideshow , some of my scrapbook photographs and also some of my photojournalism photos.  These are all copies of copies, not originals (for the net) .

The photos are what they are, exactly as they should be, errors, blurs and all.  For every mistake , either accidental or on purpose, there is a reason.

Peace … on your journey .

The photos include day trip to Pennsylvania,  to Philadelphia to see the “bell”, and other trips,  to the NYC Marathon, to  the studio, and to the forest.   Some of the photographs (the originals)  have been published elsewhere (in the 90s) and some were on exhibit throughout New York State, including in Nanuet, NY,  Grand Army Plaza and some other places.     My photography has been published in a few newspapers, one International magazine, and has been on display in over 55  (solo) exhibits in New York, and in five group exhibits in New York, USA  .

Other places, Kutztown, Lancaster, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Valley Stream, Prospect Park,  New Jersey, and Manhattan pictured in the slideshow above.  Many of the pictures with words are collage pictures, all made from recycled materials (from the 90s through 2016)
